Philpott Church

Philpott Church calls itself 'a community of grace, rooted together in Christ' and is a member congregation of the Associated Gospel Churches of Canada. Its statement of faith holds the Scriptures as originally given to be divinely inspired, infallible and the supreme authority in faith and conduct, confesses one God in three Persons, and teaches that salvation comes through the shed blood of Christ, received by faith apart from works. Questions its statement does not address it treats as disputable, extending 'grace and charity' on them.

Philpott Church worships at 160 King Street East in the Beasley neighbourhood, in the 1970s building known as the Lincoln Alexander Centre. Its interim senior pastor is Jackson Theune, and among its partners it lists TrueCity, a network of Hamilton congregations working together for the good of the city.

The congregation grew out of the Christian Workers, a movement that the City of Hamilton dates to 1892, when Peter Wiley Philpott and his followers, all former Salvation Army officers, began independent congregations to reach working people. The City’s heritage inventory records that Philpott rented a hall at King and MacNab Streets for his Hamilton followers that year. In 1901 the congregation put up its own building at Park Street North and Merrick Street, now York Boulevard, and in 1906 a large sanctuary was added that the City attributes to the architect Charles Mills. Known as the Gospel Tabernacle, it was renamed Philpott Tabernacle in 1926 and Philpott Memorial Church in 1957, the year of Philpott’s death; in April 2024 the City gave notice of its intention to designate the York Boulevard building under the Ontario Heritage Act. The Christian Workers’ churches were recognized as a denomination in 1922 and took the name Associated Gospel Churches of Canada in 1925.

Sunday worship is at 10:00 a.m. and includes open communion each week. On Thursdays at noon the church holds Church at the Table, a service with a shared lunch, after a coffee hour from 11:00.

What to expect

Each Sunday the congregation worships, prays, shares open communion and studies the Bible, and everyone is welcome. The doors open at 9:00 for coffee; a hospitality team greets visitors and helps them find their way around the building, and a prayer team is available after the service. Children join the congregation for worship and communion before leaving for Kids Church, a family room is open for children under four, and students in grades 7 to 9 are dismissed to a junior high class.
