Redeemer Evangelical Lutheran Church

Redeemer is a Lutheran Church–Canada congregation in Hamilton's east end that calls itself biblical, confessional, liturgical and sacramental. It holds the Holy Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments to be the source of its faith and life, 'the pure, clear fountain of truth', and subscribes to the Book of Concord, the Lutheran Church's statement of faith drawn from Scripture. Formed, it says, by the Triune God in Holy Baptism and the preaching of his Word, it gathers around Scripture and the body and blood of Christ, and it confesses that sinners are saved by grace through faith, with the forgiveness of sins coming through Jesus Christ alone.

Redeemer Evangelical Lutheran Church is on Wexford Avenue South in Hamilton’s east end. The city’s heritage inventory records that the Rev. A. Preisinger re-established Lutheran mission work in 1924, as houses spread along King Street East, and that the small congregation first worshipped in an empty store at King and Ottawa Streets. It then bought the Wexford Avenue lot, where its Neo-Gothic church of red rug brick, designed by W. H. E. Schmalz of Kitchener and built by Stuart Brothers of Hamilton, with a corner tower and a balcony for the organ and choir, was dedicated on 2 December 1928.

The inventory notes that Redeemer affiliated with the Missouri Synod in 1958. It now belongs to Lutheran Church–Canada, which places it in the Hamilton circuit of its East Region, and it shares its pastor with Christ Our Saviour Lutheran Church in Grimsby: the Reverend Jason Gillard, who was born in Niagara-on-the-Lake, studied at university and seminary in St. Catharines, and has been Redeemer’s pastor since 2023.

The Divine Service is held on Sundays at 9:15 in the morning, following the liturgy and hymns of the Lutheran Service Book, and a Bible study meets on Thursday mornings.

What to expect

All the services and hymns come from the Lutheran Service Book, and every service has two or three Scripture readings, which the pastor explains. Christ's body and blood are received at every Divine Service; the congregation practises closed communion, so only members of Lutheran Church–Canada receive communion at its altar. The church's word to visitors is to come as they are.
