Trinity Lutheran Church

Trinity is a congregation of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Canada, formed in Hamilton between 2019 and 2021 by four Lutheran congregations. It describes itself as 'a Christian community, open to all, transforming lives through worship, learning and service', living 'in the confidence that God loves this beautiful and broken world'. As an expression of its faith in Christ it seeks to nurture 'those who are hungry in body and spirit', and its national church states its mission as sharing the gospel through proclamation of the Word, celebration of the sacraments and service in Christ's name.

Trinity Lutheran Church belongs to the Eastern Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Canada. It was formed between 2019 and 2021 when four Hamilton congregations, Faith, Grace, St. John’s and Transfiguration, came together, and its members chose the church at 104 Hughson Street North, downtown, as its home. The city’s heritage inventory records that Primitive Methodists built that red-brick church in 1865 and that St. Paul’s German Evangelical Lutheran congregation bought it in 1884 and added its steeple; services there were in German until 1920, many immigrants from Germany and the Baltic states worshipped there after the Second World War, and in 1955 it was renamed St. John’s.

The Hughson Street church is being renovated and enlarged, with a new entrance and barrier-free access to the sanctuary and hall. Until late 2026 the congregation is worshipping at 232 Fennell Avenue East, at Upper Wellington Street on the Mountain, in the yellow-brick church that the inventory says was built in three stages between 1959 and 1984 for Transfiguration Lutheran, one of Trinity’s founding congregations.

Sunday worship is at ten in the morning, in person and on Zoom, and a short service with Holy Communion is held on Thursdays at 11:30 a.m., except in July and August. The pastors are Daniela Mertz and Jordan Smith.

What to expect

Trinity describes its worship as a blend of traditional and contemporary styles, with singing, prayer and the hearing of God's word, and invites visitors to come as they are. A choir and a more contemporary praise team lead the music. After the Sunday service everyone is invited downstairs for coffee hour.
