New Vision United Church

New Vision United Church, a United Church of Canada congregation, calls itself 'an inclusive, diverse community of Christian faith'. Worshipping in downtown Hamilton, it speaks of loving God and actively sharing with its neighbours, holds that justice for people experiencing marginalization is fundamental to an inclusive 'beloved community', and describes its ministry as intercultural and affirming.

New Vision United Church worships at the corner of Main Street West and MacNab Street South in downtown Hamilton, at the site of the former Centenary United Church. The City’s 2020 notice of intention to designate the property describes a red-brick Romanesque Revival church with Gothic Revival influences and six octagonal turrets, built in 1868 to a design by Albert H. Hills, with a front entrance addition of 1896 and a one-storey addition of 1992. The City’s heritage inventory records that the church opened on 10 May 1868 and was named Centenary in honour of the hundredth anniversary of the first Methodist chapel in North America.

According to the inventory, Centenary Methodist became Centenary United at church union in 1925, and two nearby United congregations joined it in 1957 and 1999. The City’s notice adds that the Centenary Women’s Missionary Society, founded at the church in 1881, was the first in Canada. New Vision says it began in 2014, and it describes itself as discovering ‘what God is doing in Hamilton’s urban core’. The building is also home to the Music Hall, a not-for-profit concert and event venue.

Sunday worship is at 10:30 a.m., in person and on Zoom. Worshippers enter by the door between the red pillars on the MacNab Street side of the building.

What to expect

The congregation describes its worship as experiential, participatory, image-rich and collective. The doors open at 10:00 a.m. for the 10:30 service, and those who cannot come in person can join on Zoom.
