Flamborough Baptist Church

Flamborough Baptist Church in Waterdown sums up its purpose as 'Love God. Love Others. Make Disciples.' Its statement of beliefs holds the whole Bible to be uniquely inspired by God and the final authority in faith and practice, confesses one God in three equal Persons, and teaches that justification is granted by faith alone in the sacrifice of Christ. It describes a local church as an autonomous assembly of baptized believers led by elders and deacons, and practises the baptism of believers by immersion and the Lord's Supper.

Flamborough Baptist Church is on Concession 5 East in Waterdown. Its senior pastor is Bill Thornton, and the church says that more than 400 people now take part in its ministries.

The church traces its story to 1909, when, as Flamborough Centre Baptist Church, it worshipped in a small building at the corner of the 6th Concession and Centre Road. The City’s inventory of places of worship records that the congregation moved to Flamborough Centre after Waterdown Baptist Church was destroyed by fire in 1904, and that in 1909 a frame church built in 1861 was brought by horse and wagon from Mount Healey, near Caledonia. As the township grew and its ministry expanded into the suburbs of Waterdown, the church decided in 1997 to sell its original property, and on Thanksgiving Sunday 1999 it held its first services in its present building and took the name Flamborough Baptist Church.

Sunday worship is at 10:00 a.m., in person and streamed live.

What to expect

An attendant meets visitors at the door, hands out The NewsFeed with the week's highlights and can walk families to the auditorium or the children's classrooms. The service opens with singing, with the words on screen, followed by prayer, announcements and the pastor's message from the current series; guests are under no obligation to give. Dress ranges from casual to business-casual, coffee follows the service, and the building has free wifi. Children from newborn to grade 2 go to the nursery or their classes before the service begins.
