Grace Anglican Church

Grace is an Anglican parish of the Diocese of Niagara 'in the heart of historic Waterdown'. It describes itself as a contemporary, inclusive parish whose people are 'Christian disciples transforming lives and building community', and it welcomes the participation of all, naming 2SLGBTQIA+ and IBPOC people, people with disabilities and people of every economic and social background. Its diocese describes the Anglican faith as rooted in Scripture, which contains all things necessary for salvation, and confesses one God in three persons, Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

Grace Anglican Church stands on Mill Street North in Waterdown and keeps a historic cemetery, where the parish says burial is open to anyone, member or not. The city’s heritage inventory records that Frederick and Elizabeth Feilde gave two acres in 1847 for a church, cemetery and rectory, but that the congregation, which met in the East Flamborough Township Hall in the late 1850s, could not afford to build until 1860. The stone church built that year, the work of the Waterdown stonemason Henry Edwards, was lengthened by 20 feet in 1865, and a parish hall was added in 1956.

Grace shared its clergy with Lowville until 1870 and then with St. Matthew-on-the-Plains in Aldershot, and it became an independent parish in 1922. The parish says it has served the community in the heart of Waterdown since 1860. Its rector, the Reverend David Montgomery, came to Grace in June 2025.

Sunday worship is at ten in the morning, in person and streamed on YouTube. The parish also holds Morning Prayer online on Wednesday mornings and an online meditation on Saturdays, and holds special services through the year, among them the Blessing of the Animals and the services of Holy Week, Easter and Christmas.

What to expect

Visitors enter the worship space through the glass door on the south-east side of the building, where a greeter welcomes them, and may sit anywhere. The church asks people to wear whatever helps them feel comfortable to worship, says that no one is expected to give to the collection, and describes its Sunday service as a lively one with music. Children are especially welcome.
