James North Baptist Church

James North Baptist Church is a Fellowship Baptist congregation in Hamilton's North End whose stated mission is to love God, love others and make disciples. Its statement of faith holds the Bible to be verbally inspired and free from error as originally written, confesses one God in three equal persons, and teaches salvation by God's sovereign, electing grace, with justification by faith alone in Christ. It describes a church as a company of immersed believers led by pastors and deacons, and observes two ordinances, the baptism of believers by immersion and the Lord's Supper.

James North Baptist Church is on James Street North in the North End, in a building it moved into in 2020, a block from its former church on Hughson Street. The church’s website described the building in 2024 as having a combined gym and auditorium seating 500, a glazed atrium and a community kitchen, along with 45 one- and two-bedroom apartments for marginalized people, provided in partnership with Indwell, a Christian charity that creates affordable housing. Its lead pastor is Dave Gray.

The church dates its founding to 1887 and says it was known as Hughson Street Baptist Church from 1910 to 2020. The City’s heritage inventory records that the congregation grew from prayer meetings that the Reverend George Anderson of James Street Baptist Church began in North End homes in 1886. On 10 August 1887 eighteen members were dismissed from James Street to form the Northern Baptist Church, which met first in a former Anglican mission building at Ferrie Street and Ferguson Avenue and in 1909 moved to the former Hughson Street School at 383 Hughson Street North. Before settling on James Street North the congregation met for a time at Bennetto Public School and at City Kidz.

Sunday worship is at 10:00 a.m., and services are posted online. A Karen-language congregation, Karen Baptist Church, also meets in the building.
