St. Ann Parish
St. Ann's is a Roman Catholic parish of the Diocese of Hamilton in Ancaster, established in 1952. Rooted in the love of Jesus Christ and strengthened by the Eucharist, it says it exists 'to glorify God by proclaiming the Gospel, celebrating the sacraments, forming faithful disciples, and serving our neighbour with charity'. With the Catholic Church, it celebrates seven sacraments and holds that at Mass the bread and wine become the body and blood of Christ.
St. Ann’s stands at the north-west corner of Wilson Street West and Fiddler’s Green Road in Ancaster. Until the middle of the twentieth century, Ancaster’s Catholics went to St. Augustine’s in Dundas for Mass. A small wooden mission church was built on the site in 1949 under Father J. A. Noonan of Canadian Martyrs in Hamilton, and St. Ann’s became a parish in 1952, entrusted to the Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate with Father William Loftus as pastor. Priests of the diocese took over from the Oblates in 1979.
The present church was completed in 1958 on the site of the mission church. The City’s heritage inventory describes it as a frame and stucco building whose Spanish Mission design is similar to St. Peter’s Church in New Westminster, British Columbia, for which Father Loftus was also responsible. The portico on its front was added in 1982 and the parish centre in 1992, and for its fiftieth anniversary in 2002 the parish set up a statue of St. Ann outside the main entrance. The parish notes that three priests who served there later became bishops; its pastor is Father Ross Campbell.
The Saturday vigil Mass is at 5:00 p.m., and Sunday Masses are at 9:00 and 11:00 a.m. Weekday Mass is at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday and at 8:00 a.m. from Wednesday to Friday.
