Sts. Peter and Paul Parish

Sts. Peter and Paul is a Roman Catholic parish of the Diocese of Hamilton on the Hamilton Mountain, founded in 1948. It describes itself as 'an inclusive Christian community in the Catholic tradition seeking to serve God, follow Christ and change the world', and says it welcomes 'both human experience and human diversity'. With the Catholic Church, it celebrates seven sacraments and holds that at Mass the bread and wine become the body and blood of Christ.

Sts. Peter and Paul stands on Brucedale Avenue East on the Hamilton Mountain. Bishop Joseph F. Ryan founded it in 1948 as a second parish on the Mountain, to serve its growing population, and appointed Father Joseph Wilhelm as pastor. Its school opened that autumn, and Mass was celebrated at first in the school gym.

A basement church was built in 1950, and as the number of families doubled, an upper church followed: its cornerstone was laid on 26 August 1956 and it was dedicated on 2 December 1956. The City’s heritage inventory describes a modern church of red brick, stone and glass designed by Frank H. Burcher and built by Olmstead and Parker, to which a baptistery and a tower with a carillon were added in 1963; the parish added a west wing in 1966. Father Wilhelm served until 1963, when he became Auxiliary Bishop of Calgary, and later Archbishop of Kingston. The parish now counts more than 1,300 registered families, and its pastor is Father Joe Durkacz.

Mass is celebrated on Saturday at 5:00 p.m. and on Sunday at 10:00 a.m., and from Tuesday to Friday at 8:30 a.m. in the chapel.

What to expect

The parish asks people to arrive in time for the start of Mass. A Children's Liturgy for ages 4 to Grade 2 is held during the 10:00 a.m. Sunday Mass from September to June, and several times a year a free coffee social follows the weekend Masses in the parish hall. Newcomers who plan to make the parish their home can fill in a blue registration form, found at the church entrances.
