Hamilton Mennonite Church
Hamilton Mennonite Church follows Jesus in the Anabaptist Mennonite tradition and sums up its vision as 'sharing God's grace, living Christ's peace'. It belongs to Mennonite Church Eastern Canada and Mennonite Church Canada, and holds the Shared Convictions of Global Anabaptists of Mennonite World Conference as central to its belief and practice. It says it welcomes all to take part in its life and ministry, whatever their age, race, ethnicity, ability, sexual orientation or gender identity.
Hamilton Mennonite Church meets on Lower Horning Road, in a quiet residential area near McMaster University in west Hamilton. Its pastor is Max Kennel. The church counts about 170 active participants, who come from the neighbourhood and from as far away as Mississauga, Grimsby, Freelton and Caledonia, and in September 2026 it began gathering pledges for a proposed renovation to give its front entrance a ramp and make it barrier-free.
The congregation began in 1952 as the Hamilton United Mennonite Mission, became Hamilton United Mennonite Fellowship in 1957 and Hamilton Mennonite Church in 1963, and broke ground at 143 Lower Horning Road in 1964. Its history also includes the Welcome Inn, founded in 1965 in response to needs in the North End and now an independent community centre that the church still supports. Grace New Life Mennonite Church and The Meeting Place are its sister congregations in Hamilton.
Sunday worship is at 9:45 a.m., or 10:00 in the summer.
What to expect
Worship is followed by time to visit and connect, and then by a Christian education hour for all ages; in summer a potluck lunch takes the place of the classes. There is a small parking lot behind the church, and plenty of parking at the school across the street on Sunday mornings.
