Panagia Greek Orthodox Church of the Dormition of the Theotokos

Panagia is a parish of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of Canada, under the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople, incorporated in 1976. It describes itself as part of the worldwide Orthodox Church that began at Pentecost, and its stated mission is to proclaim 'the Divinity of Christ' and to live the Orthodox Christian faith 'as the Body of Christ on earth', in worship whose Byzantine music is 'rendered in both Greek and English'.

Panagia, the Greek Orthodox Church of the Dormition of the Theotokos, stands at the corner of East 15th Street and Brucedale Avenue on the Hamilton Mountain. It was incorporated in 1976 as a parish of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of Canada, founded by men and women of Greek descent. Its name honours the Mother of God, and its feast, the Dormition, is kept on 15 August; the parish’s annual festival, Hamilton Greek Fest, is held at Inch Park on the weekend closest to that date.

The parish describes its church as Byzantine in style, with a central dome about 80 feet high and a relief of the two-headed eagle above the arch over its three main doors. Plans for the interior decoration were drawn up in 1995, and its more than 90 icons, mostly in acrylic, were painted by Demetrios Vernezos, an iconographer from the Greek island of Evia; the nave and balcony together seat almost 400. The parish priest is Protopresbyter Elias Drossos.

On Sunday, Orthros begins at 8:30 a.m. and the Divine Liturgy at 9:30, in Greek and English, with the Liturgy all in English on the first and third Sundays of the month in the parish’s autumn 2026 programs. Liturgies on weekday feasts are listed in the monthly program of services.

What to expect

Newcomers and visitors are welcome to attend and pray. The parish explains that non-Orthodox Christians and non-Christians may witness the whole Divine Liturgy, but that Holy Communion is reserved for members of the Orthodox Church who have prepared to receive it. On Sundays the services run from 8:30 to about 11:30 a.m., and Sunday school classes begin at about 10:00 a.m., straight after the Gospel reading.
